TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

Best-sellers are published by big name publishing houses. The publisher takes a risk that a manuscript is commercial and pays for all design and printing. A marketing team designs the cover and forms a sales plan. The author is given a royalty (a piece of the profits) as the books are sold, and sometimes an advance against future royalties.

This is best for a big project because the author’s royalty is just 10% of the wholesale price. Bookshops can return unsold books many months later. The Good: national and international marketing, no expenses, and the respect of being accepted as a commercial risk. The Bad: no author control, small percent profit.

This is perfect for small or niche projects that wouldn’t be suitable for a commercial publisher, or when an author wants to maximise profits. An author pays a book printer to produce books. High-technology allows for on-demand printing: print the books you have pre-sold. Family Histories can be presold to family members to pay printing costs.
